THE COMBE DE L’A

The Combe de l’A nature reserve, in the municipality of Liddes, is a huge, intimate area in the heart of the Great Saint Bernard region.

This alpine paradise, nestled between 1400 and 3000 metres above sea level, offers the enthusiastic hiker and contemplative tourist not only exceptional flora and fauna, but also an atmosphere where nature has become a way of life since time immemorial. The variety of alpine biotopes, spread out at various altitudes, allows the development and survival of many animal species.

Combe de l’A is home to big game such as deer, chamois, roe deer, ibex, but also smaller mammals such as foxes, badgers and marmots. In the sky, the golden eagle, the goshawk and the great raven fly in peace and quiet. A path allows the walker to move around without disturbing the surrounding fauna while enjoying the privilege of seeing it move freely. Along the way, didactic panels provide a wealth of information on the geological and botanical particularities of the area.

By following the murmur of the torrent of the A river, one reaches the gîte de la Tsissette which is a stage of the Tour du Saint-Bernard. This former mountain pasture transformed into a comfortable gîte is open from mid-June to mid-October. Walkers can eat there on their way or stay there while taking full advantage of the peace and quiet of the place and the many possibilities for walks. Further up in the valley at 2350 metres above sea level, at Vouasse, the municipality of Liddes has had an old mountain hut refurbished.

In 2004, the Swiss Foundation for Spatial Planning and Protection completely rebuilt the dry-stone building according to traditional methods. This rural gîte has thus preserved its original characteristics and character and was extended in 2020.
